The Collalto Family

This is a story of a family who arrived in the north of Italy more than 1 000 years ago, and who settled in the village of Susegana, which is a mere 60 km from Venice. They became a part of, and were leading figures, in all the major events, which shaped the history and the future of this region.
As can be expected, they were instrumental in setting up many different new ventures and businesses, but agriculture, and in particular, the vineyards and winemaking has always been a very important cornerstone in the Collalto family's existence.

Over the years, they became familiar with every square metre of their Estate, they noted how the grapes reacted to certain climatic conditions, which soils were best, which slopes got the most sunlight, they also experimented with different varietals and most importantly, they continuously invested in the most modern and up-to-date equipment available at the time. They still do!

Their rather large estate is overseen by a professional viticulturist. Together with the winemaker, he has been intimately involved with the creation of every single bottle which has passed through their winery. The winemaker is a firm believer in blending tradition with modern science. The wines that he has produced are therefore, not surprisingly, fine ambassadors of the successful marriage of these various aspects: they truly speak of the place where the grapes were grown, of the care, love and attention which the grapes and the wines have received on their way to being bottled, and not least of the use of the most modern winemaking equipment and methods.

The centrepiece of the Collalto family’s vast 1500 hectares Estate is the magnificent and ancient San Salvatore Castle, which straddles and dominates the whole horizon on the hills above Susegana, near Venice in Italy.
For more than 1000 years, the Collalto family has enriched the region by not only never forgetting their ancient traditions, but even more so by their constant development of environmentally-friendly and technological-based agricultural policies and improvements. The Count Collalto wine Estate is an integral part of this history and progress.
