The Trenches of the Dolomites. “ Memoirs” of the First World War

The war on the Dolomites took place in trenches scraped out of the rock on the hillsides. Often Italian trenches faced Austrian ones a few meters. It was a war of patience and waiting, but when the troops attacked, the battle caused thousands of deaths. The trenches are exactly as the soldiers had left them. The tour of the trenches is surely a very interesting and a very “touching” one. They are located near Vittorio Veneto just above Cortina d'Ampezzo, one part to Falzarego Lagazuoi and the other to Monte Piana, near the Tre Cime di Lavaredo above the Passo Tre Croci and Lake Misurina.
We recommend to visit also Monte Piana, so you can make one single excursion on the beautiful Dolomites and there you can enjoy the view of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, regarded as one of the most beautiful mountains in the world. On the way back you can stop in Cortina for one hour stroll among people and to browse in its beautiful shops.

How to arrive to Monte Piana and to Tre Cime di Lavaredo?

It is very simple: take the highway (gate Vittorio Veneto north), go to Cortina (1hr), then turn right to Passo Tre Croci. After a few kilometers, at lake Misurina, you will find all the directions you need. You will need to walk to reach the Rifugi of Monte Piana and of Tre Cime di Lavaredo; you can not get to the top there by car.
